The Author

Ian McFatridge was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1958. When he was seven his family moved to the Highlands where he spent the next years in Strathglass and Oban. He discovered his love for Edinburgh when he studied law at Edinburgh University. After graduating he qualified as a solicitor and spent twenty five years as a solicitor in Brechin which is a small country town in Angus.

He was then appointed an Employment Judge and spent the rest of his legal career chairing employment tribunals throughout Scotland, dealing with cases involving discrimination and unfair dismissal. He has two adult children and lives in Forfar with his German wife Petra, who has been very supportive in the writing of this novel.

He has numerous interests and frequently travels. As well as his travels abroad he spends a lot of time in the Highlands either walking or sailing. He usually visits the opera at Glyndebourne at least once a year and tries to make time to attend as much as possible at

the Edinburgh Festival.

Since leaving school he has had the ambition of writing a novel, but life so often got in the way and various projects have been started and abandoned over the years. The Fold in the Map is the first project to actually be finished. It combines his love of Edinburgh and also his

passion for ideas. He is an optimist and wanted to write a novel set in contemporary Scotland that wasn’t all doom and gloom. He believes that human beings are hard wired to have a spiritual dimension and the novel tries to explore this in a way that is non-preachy

and also hopefully sometimes amusing and thought provoking.
